Nanshancun Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Early Cretaceous, K1ns, (42b)

Province:
Guangdong

Type Locality and Naming

The strata were called as the Nanshan unit by the Guangdong Geological Survey Team in 1989. The Guangdong Geological Survey Team (1991) again named it as the Nanshan Formation. The type locality is in the Nanshan Village of Huidong, Guangdong. The key section is the Reshuidong section in the Haifeng County (115º00'E, 22º50'N).

Lithology and Thickness

The Nanshan Formation is a group of volcanic-sedimentary deposits. It is dominated by dacite volcanic clastic rocks, rhyolite clastic rocks, with intercalation of volcanic clastic sedimentary rocks. A layer of lava occurs at the top. It is 242 to 2072 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Volcanics

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The formation is unconformably overlying the Shuidishang Fm (not in Lexicon or Strat-names book). Regionally the next older unit in current column set is the Dalong Fm of late Permian.

Upper contact

The formation is unconformably underlying the Guancaohu Fm.

Regional extent

The Nanshan Formation is distributed in the Haifeng, Puning and Lufeng areas of Guangdong.
